The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s magnum opus, is a story of sin, guilt, and torture. Set in a New England colony during the 1600’s, Hawthorne gives a startling look at the harsh Puritan community in which Hester Prynne, the protagonist, lives. After engaging in passionate sin which results in a child, Hester must wear the mark of her sin, the Scarlet A on her chest forever. Instead of fleeing back to England, Hester bravely stays in the colony to raise her child alone, never revealing the identity of the father of her child.

In the background, Hester’s husband, Roger Chillingworth, takes on a new identity as the town doctor, and makes it his mission to heal the young Reverend Dimmesdale, who is slowly and painfully dying for no apparent reason. However, when Chillingworth learns the identity of Hester’s former lover, he sets out on a new mission to torture him mentally, instead of healing him.
Examining themes such as the power of guilt and being true to oneself, The Scarlet Letter is a story that takes a look deep into the human heart to find the truth that lies within each soul.
