Description

The perfect precursor to the best-selling Essay Architect Writing System, our Essay Apprentice Writing System can be used in two ways: either to help students in upper elementary or middle school learn how to write, or as an intervention for those high school students who are really struggling to write even one or two decent paragraphs. The Essay Apprentice Writing System starts with the very basic building blocks of great writing - sentences - and culminates in a basic five-paragraph essay. Through simple, practical, and fun activities, students learn the step-by-step process of creating writing they can be proud of.

  • Help students in grades 5-8 build autonomy and confidence through simple and practical writing activities and exercises
  • Help anxious, struggling, or resistant writers in grades 9-12 work through the basics of writing, step by step

Students begin with fun creative writing exercises that are not only fun, but help students learn the different purposes of writing, and help students gain confidence in their writing ability:

  • Writing to Entertain: Cartoon Strip, Horoscope, and Poetry
  • Writing to Inform: Recipe of "Me", Quick Messages and Notes
  • Writing to Persuade: Personal Advertisement, Magazine Advertisement

Students then move to sentence construction activities focused to help students create clean, succinct sentences while focusing on essential technique and structure:

  • Sentence Structure
  • Fragments
  • Main and Subordinate Clauses
  • Simple and Compound Sentences
  • Punctuating Sentences
  • Expanding Sentences
  • Sentence Variety
  • Sentence Combining
  • Using Modifiers

Following these sentence construction activities, students move to writing paragraphs, learning how to take the sentences they have written, expanding them into well-formatted, coherent paragraphs supported with details:

  • Paragraph Structure and Formatting
  • Developing Paragraph Details
  • Types of Writing
  • Writing Thesis Statements
  • Writing Introductions
  • Writing Conclusions

Students then begin preparing for formal essay writing, at first as a small group, in a small group essay assignment. In these activities, students learn how to take an essay prompt, brainstorm ideas, and prepare their essay, using the skills they have learned in the previous sections:

  • Structure of the Essay
  • Evaluating Essays
  • Verbal Discussion of Ideas
  • Organizing Ideas
  • Writing Group Essays

Students then edit and evaluate the group essays, in the section Evaluating Model and Non-Model Essays with:

  • What Should an Essay Look Like?
  • Peer-Editing and Evaluation Activities
  • Sample Model and Non-Model Essays

Once students have had practice writing as a group, and learned to see model and non-model essays (the do's and dont's of writing), students then prepare their own essay, starting with the section Preparing for Individual Writing. Activities culminate in this individual essay writing process, as students take all they have learned and implement it in their own final essay.

  • Verbal Discussion of Ideas
  • Writing Thesis Statements
  • Individual Organization of Thoughts
  • Pre-Writing Process
  • Writing Individual Essays

Finally, students can integrate page after page of Resources, Tips, and Hints, with helpful handouts that can be used in writing notebooks as well as interactive writing notebooks:

  • Using a Dictionary and Thesaurus
  • Reading an Essay Prompt
  • Essay Templates
  • Show, Don’t Tell
  • Using Idioms
  • Precise Word Choice
  • Vivid Verbs
  • Misspelled and Confusing Words
  • 15 extra essays for evaluation
For more practice and specific essay types, students can then move on to the Essay Architect Writing System, the second book in this series.
