"Stanley Yelnats is living with a curse.  Ever since his “no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather” failed to follow through with Madame Zeroni’s request, at least it seems that way.  Having been accused and convicted of stealing a pair of shoes, Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake.  It is not the usual camp with sports and games and lots to do, but a rehabilitation camp where every day, each of the “campers” is required to dig a hole five feet in diameter and five feet deep to “build character.”  During his stay, he learns the value of true friendship and when he figures out that the Warden has ulterior motives in having the boys dig the holes, the plot thickens." —1999 Newbery Medal winner.
